I think this part is key:

“Artists cross a line when they openly pick a fight with their critics. Where critics cross the line is pushing past the work and impugning the artist’s motives, intentions, and character.”

As well as the overall tone I got from the piece which I’ll sum up as:

give otherwise honest and good faith creators the benefit of the doubt when they step in it.

I don’t know much about the particular “controversy” in question here, but I will just say that if a creator feels the need to apologize after facing backlash that there’s room for that as well. Nuance is what we need. The ability to be reflective and not reflexive when dealing with hot button topics.

Too often we pile on individuals for honest mistakes while ignoring the poor practices of institutions and crowds.
