STEAL IT: 7 days left to fund this kickass Kickstarter
Ennead: The Rule of Nine | An Epic Comic Book Collector's Box is your chance to get caught up on one of Substack's most interesting indie comics in one fell swoop.
Fellas, as you well know, we here at rent*space like subtle.
Some johnnies may like their comics to beat them over the heads with exposition and straightforward themes, but not you folks. You like your comics complex. Subtext-stuffed.
Yes, besides the occasional weakness for Christmas-themed Spidey smut, you’re a sharp and mature set. Sophisticated, even.
And that’s why I’m here to recommend that my fellow sophisticates strike now on Ennead: The Rule of Nine| An Epic Comic Book Collector's Box by fellow Substacker JL Johnson as it enters its final week on Kickstarter.
The case for this campaign
I’d do the generic thing and say you’ll like Ennead if you like slow-burn epic fantasy like Game of Thrones or Rings of Power.
But let me also throw in my two cents as someone who is not typically an epic fantasy fan to say that Ennead’s smart writing and rich dialogue will appeal to, well, anyone like me who enjoys good writing like that.
The other thing I really like about Ennead is that while there’s big, consequential political stuff happening in the main plot, there’s a parallel story focused on a mysterious, laconic, wandering badass type on his own quest influenced by, but largely separate from, the machinations of the world around him.
Beginning to see why this might appeal to me in particular? :)
Why jump in now?
Ennead is a sprawling, multi-media project, and the kind where you get out as much as you put in. The current project is a trade that will get you more or less up to speed on everything JL has done so far, but primarily guided through the eyes of the aforementioned badass, Inahtuu Kinisc.
I hear you. Jumping into a Thrones-esque project can be intimidating since you need to invest a lot of attention capital upfront.
But that’s why I like the approach of this project so much — by focusing on one POV character who is more or less removed from the big political game unfolding in the background, you get into the world in a grounded, more linear way.
And if you like the world you’re in, well, some of the tiers offer a year’s paid subscription to Ennead on Substack so you can dig deeper and get completely up to speed.
Warming up to it?
If you need a little more help getting hyped up about it, jog on over to the FAQS Project and listen to the latest episode, where JL talks about the virtues of the Kickstarter offering, as well as his process and the broader world he’s building.
It’s hard not to get excited about what he’s up to. Hell, he’s been a recommended publisher here at rent*space for the past year for good reason.
Seven days to go, folks.
Let’s get him funded!
Big reminder folks that if you like this post, hit the ❤️ up there to let me know, or leave me a 💬 down below, I’d love to hear from you.
