Serious note, the both of y’all have been creators I’ve admired. You both challenge yourselves as well as the craft. Looking forward to the input you relay to your outputs I’m here to support.
You touch on a lot of great points. I think this is comic cultures paradigm shift going foward and those that wish to create will find the audience that's just tired of the back and forth and desire to get back to the roots of the medium to begin with. Kind of like our own great reset.
Ah yes, no getting around that those nights absolutely fucking blow. When old people say “even those, you will cherish!” I want to shove their face into a garbage can.
Fwiw, I do believe it's possible to engage on social media as a creator AND as a basic human - you can have conversations and share thoughts on pop culture and inspirations, etc. w/o engaging in politics or controversy.
One thought I've been pushing recently, whenever someone starts demonizing social media and shouts "the algorithm!" I suggest back "You mean your own behavior?" Because that's what the algorithm IS. It's a purely responsive piece of code that serves you more of what you've engaged with. It doesn't take more than 1-2 weeks of different behavior to virtually annihilate what you were seeing before.
I rarely see any social media fights/tiffs. I rarely see the controversies. I hear about them later, usually on Discord groups or spoken of after the fact. But that's not what I use social media for, so the "algorithm" never serves it to me. I think we can be there for others, have non-controversial conversations as fun actually social side tangents, while still mostly being there for the work.
I keep hearing how negative and toxic social media is, but...I never see it. I know it exists, but the people who complain about it, I have to wonder what they're doing differently than me to be exposed to it 24/7. My own POV is proof that it CAN be done. You CAN use social media as you like, be present often enough, without getting sucked into the whirlpool of flame wars.
Anywho, love this conversation between the two of you, please keep it going! You're giving me ideas for guest writers on my own stack.
The algo point is a mixed one for me … I think it’s a bit too “ah so you think society is bad, yet you participate in it!” to dismiss it outright when the house is gamifying it to gerrymander attention at any cost.
BUT I do agree that some self-awareness about what one clicks, same as some self awareness about the food you put in your mouth, can change things for the better.
In any case, my criticism is less about tools and more about the pockets of people within the community that have an outsized influence on the climate and character of the community, for the worse (in my opinion). If those toxic voices have an undue effect on the entire community then it’s difficult to feel part of that community.
But, this is the last time where I’ll cry over that spilled milk. The decision is made, and there’s no value in continuing to vaguely criticize a community you’re not a part of.
What we’re doing here is setting the table to talk more about what we value. What we’re *for*, not what we’re against.
And I’m happy you’re here for it/enjoying it so far, Dave! We’re happy to have you 😊
And to Add. Who in the Comicsgates camp actually bought Isom from Eric July just for the comic? Probably a meager 5% and that's being conservative... Heh heh haha
This is great to see Rent, I just read JL’s response as well good to see you too bringing it together
We have you to blame for this alliance, Grandmaster 😏
🤣 in that case I’ll take full responsibility and credit, cheers 🥂 to you both
Haha cheers to you too, buddy! 🍻

Appreciate that, Mr. Boyce. You know I’ll come knocking next time I have something fun to share 💪
Am I supposed to comment on these?
Many directions to go from here. Looking forward to this series, my friend. My response is scheduled for this upcoming Monday.
Comment for reach? 😂

I would love to hear more on this through the podcasts outlets. Might start one of my own called. The War ON Art.
Love this approach Rent! I look forward to reading more 😁👍
Thanks Sam, hope all is well!
My pleasure dude! All good here, apart from a few rough nights with the 2 year old this week 🥱

Haha...straight up mate 🤣

100% on all three points. I’d love for comics to have an Andrew Schultz type figure change the paradigm.
